Arsenal’s comprehensive thumping of Norwich on Saturday gave further fuel to their title aspirations and left Arsene Wenger purring at his midfield maestros.
The team performance at the Emirates at the weekend showed glimpses of the glory days and the free flowing attacking football on display was frightening at times.
The combination of Ozil, Wilshere and Cazorla in the middle of the park gave Arsenal an abundance of attacking talent, with Arteta and Flamini providing some much needed protection for the back four.
The Gunners first goal came on 18 minutes and is an early contender for goal of the season. Jack Wilshere finished off a wonderful ‘tiki-taka’ style move, with one touch passing and delicate touches from Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud. The combination of flicks and flare looked like a move that had come straight from the training ground and made the helpless Norwich defence look invisible.
It is this stylish, swanky football that Arsenal fans crave and the arrival of Mesut Ozil appears to have really galvanised the Gunners. Players like Wilshere, Cazorla and premier league player of the month Aaron Ramsey have all been forced to raise their game after seeing the level of Ozil’s performances rise to astronomical heights.
This can only be good news for an Arsenal side that has often been accused of lacking the strength and depth needed to sustain a true title challenge. With Walcott, Podolski and Oxlade-Chamberlin all eagerly waiting to return from injury, the Arsenal attack appears to have the real strength and depth required to mount a title challenge.
Despite the wealth of attacking options at Wenger’s disposal, there are some defensive weaknesses that will surely be exposed by world-class strikers. Per Mertesacker lacks pace and is often caught out at the back by speedy strikers. His centre back partner Laurent Koscielny is often left to pick up the pieces of his partners defensive frailties. But with the likes of Mikel Arteta and the much-unsung Mathieu Flamini providing excellent cover for the back four, they aren’t under as much pressure as they otherwise might have been.
Arsenal biggest test of the season comes in tomorrow’s Champions league game against last year’s beaten finalists Borussia Dortmund. Klopp’s men will surely test the Gunners back line with some of the best attacking talents in Europe trying themselves at the Emirates.
The challenge of an attacking Dortmund side combined with Arsenal’s free flowing football is more that enough to whet the appetite of football fans across Europe and promises an action packed game.
The Dortmund game on Tuesday will give Wenger’s men a chance to test themselves against the very best and will give a good indication of whether they have the quality to go the distance and win the Premier league.
