The early days of the Premier League seems to suggest that this season could be the most open title race in history.

With Arsenal sitting in top spot, two points clear of Chelsea and Liverpool, the Gunners look like genuine title contenders for the first time in years.

Manchester City, have struggled along with the rivals United as both outside the top three positions in the league.

But is the Premier League table lying to us?

Are Arsenal a much improved side and are Manchester United much worse?

Have Manchester City faltered under their new manager and was Tottenham's spending spree worth while?

We take a look at the corresponding* fixtures of last season to expose how well or badly the top five Premier League teams of last season are actually doing.

*In the instance that a team played a newly promoted club, we compared it to the equivalent promoted club last season.
