David Moyes must learn quickly at Manchester United

It is safe to say that the weekend result for Manchester United against Southampton was a massive disappointment for the Red Devils.

The 1-1 draw at Old Trafford with the Saints has left United eighth in the Barclays Premier League and eight points adrift from league leaders Arsenal.

It would appear that already it will be a tough task for Moyes and his players to retain the title, although it is still early in the season.

Something clearly has to change at Old Trafford. United need to kill teams off like they should have with Southampton on Saturday.

United hit the bar twice and had other chances which really should have been converted into goals.

Moreover, Moyes needs to take a less defensive approach. Taking Wayne Rooney off for Chris Smalling has been heavily criticised by United fans who prefer to watch their team play a more attacking way.

It appears that Moyes seems too focused on not losing the game. An extra man in midfield would have been a better way to see the game out against Southampton as opposed to an extra defender.

The extra man in midfield would have stopped United being over-run in the middle of the park and keeping Rooney on the pitch increases the goal threat.

The main thing Moyes needs to get right is the leaky defence. Moyes has picked around with his centre back pairing and went with Phil Jones and Johnny Evans at the weekend who seemed to defend fairly well.

United need a consistent centre back pairing playing every weekend, so the players can gain a better understanding of how each other plays.

However, let's forget the talk that United will not qualify for the Champions League because let's be honest, they really should. United have the best striking partnership in the league in Rooney and Robin van Persie, so the club has goals in abundance from those two.

United just need to regain more confidence and the only way for them to do that is to win games. The club needs a long win streak or an undefeated streak to boost confidence.

This in turn will create a fear factor around the club once again, which many fans have feared has disappeared due to the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ultimately, United do need to change things and quick in order to have any chance of winning the title. Drop points in their next league game and it would be safe to rule United out of the title race, even so early in the season
