Dortmund star was close to joining Arsenal

Borussia Dortmund star Nuri Sahin has revealed that he came close to joining Arsenal three times, according to Goal.

The Turkey international has stated that he was on the verge of putting pen to paper on a number of occasions but for differing reasons a deal was never made between clubs.

"It was very close in 2012. Three times in my career I was almost at Arsenal. It never happened, but that is normal in football," the 25-year-old said.

The Dortmund midfielder joined Liverpool last year after spending time at Real Madrid, but admits that he could quite have easily joined the Gunners instead.

"I think I was 16 the first time and then last summer we spoke with Arsenal, but in the end I signed with Liverpool.

"It was a good time for me to be part of a great club like Liverpool with such history and good team-mates."

Sahin failed to make the grade at Real Madrid and then never really hit the heights whilst on loan at Anfield, but he is expected to start in tonight's Champions League crunch game against Arsenal.

Dortmund will be looking to replicate the form they showcased last campaign when they reached the final, but know that a loss against Arsene Wenger's men could be damning.

Sahin pin pointed ex-Bundesliga ace Mesut Ozil as the north Londoner's main threat.

"Mesut is a great player and good friend of mine. If you said he was the only player for Arsenal it would be disrespectful, but you can definitely say he is an important part of the team," Sahin said.

"During a game, it doesn't matter who is against you. It is important that we have our match plan and if we manage to have our plan and play accordingly we don't have to worry about individual match-ups."
