Chelsea deputy left-back Ryan Bertrand believes that his manager Jose Mourinho did not deserve the punishment he received following the Premier League clash with Cardiff City on Saturday.

The Portuguese manager was been sent off for complaining bitterly about the referee's action towards Branislav Ivanovic's delayed throwing. He was ousted from his managerial seat and offered a place amongst the fans.

But Bertrand, who deputised in the absence of Ashley Cole during the match, believes that the 'Special One' did not deserve the fierce reaction he got.

"The manager has shown his  spirit and desire. He did not deserve to be  sent off but it's good to see that passion," Bertrand said.

"It definitely inspires the team. At home you need to make it your fortress, and you need to do everything you can to win."

Indeed, the home factor ought to be protected as Mourinho strives to do.

Meanwhile, the 24-year old also claims that the team spirit has been revived via the manager's addictive winning spirit.

“The old Mourinho spirit is back, definitely,” he told reporters.

“When he was here before, what filtered through to the youth levels was that we never thought about losing.

“We were Chelsea and we knew we were going to win, no matter how pretty or ugly we needed to be.

“That’s something that has been re-instilled in us now, in the training, the preparation, the attention to detail, which give you the confidence to go out and do what you have got to do.

“And it’s good to see that passion from the manager, too. It inspires the team.

“If you looked around [against Cardiff], he had the whole squad behind him, the fans came into it, and it was good support."

Chelsea will face Schalke 04 in the UEFA Champions League tonight, knowing that they need to win to ensure they remain on track for qualification. Schalke currently sit top of their group, having won both fixtures so far.
