The San Jose Sharks continued their unbeaten start to the NHL season by defeating the Detroit Red Wings in a shootout.

Sharks forward Logan Couture notched the only goal in the shootout to lift San Jose past the Red Wings at Joe Lewis Arena in Michigan.

Finnish goaltender Antti Niemi made 24 saves in goal for the Sharks but he was matched every step of the way at the other end of the ice by 29-year-old Jimmy Howard who made 27 saves throughout the game.

In the end it came down to the shootout to decide the winner and it was the Sharks who went on to claim the victory.

While Detroit failed to score with their three attempts, Couture was finally able to beat Howard and the Sharks skated away with another win to maintain their impressive start to the season.
