Andres Iniesta is close to signing a new, five-year with Barcelona, vice-president Josep-Maria Bartomeu has stated.

Iniesta, 29, has 18 months on his current contract and rumours were gathering pace in recent months about the playmaker's future.

Both Manchester City and Manchester United were said to be interested in signing one of the best midfielders in the world.

But now it looks like all rumours will be put to bed after Bartomeu confirmed an agreement was close whilst speaking to Barcelona TV.

"Iniesta stays with us," he said.

''The negotiations are under way and both sides want to sign.

"Iniesta's new contract will be the maximum allowed of five years.''

It was questioned if Iniesta wanted to sign a new contract with the Catalans, but now it looks like a formality for Iniesta to put pen-to-paper to the new contract.

The deal will tie Iniesta to Barcelona until he's well into his thirties, and it could well mean the La Masia product stays at the Nou Camp his whole career.
