History shows that the team that is able to hoist the Barclays Premier League trophy at the end of each season is the team that has a potent goalscorer.

Robin van Persie for Manchester United last season, Sergio Aguero the year before for Manchester City, Didier Drogba during Chelsea’s successful period, and of course Thierry
Henry for the Arsenal 'Invincibles'.

Even a much maligned Dimitar Berbatov took home the Premier League Golden Boot when Manchester United took the title in the 2010/11 season.

Unfortunately for Chelsea, since the departure of Drogba, they have been unable to find a consistent striker that they are able to rely on.

“Every time I've seen them it's like they are a man down before they've started the game,” Jamie Carragher is quoted by FourFourTwo, after commenting about their striking problems.

“No matter how many players you've got, if you haven't got a centre forward a lot of it [your play] falls down.”

They tried by splashing £50million pounds on Fernando Torres, but the boy from sunny Spain has been unable to repay the faith that Chelsea had in him, netting just 36 goals in 139 appearances thus far.

Perhaps more alarmingly is the fact that only 15 of those goals were scored in Premier League fixtures, having made 87 appearances.

Compare that to his Liverpool days where he netted 65 goals from 102 Premier League matches.

Then they tried former Newcastle striker Demba Ba, who was a prolific scorer during his time at St James Park. However,  just like Torres, Ba has only netted two goals for the Blues in 14 League appearances.

With both on lucrative contracts, Mourinho added Samuel Eto’o to his team, however the former Barcelona and Inter Milan forward has struggled to receive any substantial game time, similar to young German forward, Andre Schurrle, who has failed to bulge the old onion bag since his summer arrival at Stamford Bridge.

Schurrle was able to score a hat-trick for his country against Sweden during the international break, so Chelsea fans will be hoping that perhaps he can become a reliable scorer in the future.

Either way, if Chelsea want to live up to their own high expectations and reclaim the Premier League title in 2014, they must find a reliable striker.
