Rooney stars as Manchester United beat Sociedad
Manchester United beat Real Sociedad 1-0 at Old Trafford
Wayne Rooney stole the show as Manchester United edged past Real Sociedad 1-0 at Old Trafford thanks to an opening minute own goal from Inigo Martinez.
United made the perfect start as they went 1-0 up within a minute as Rooney produced a moment of magic turning the Sociedad defence inside out and then struck a fine shot which rebounded off the post, only for Martinez to put the ball into his own net from five yards.
United continued to dominate the match and came close on a number of occasions before Javier Hernandez found the net once again for David Moyes' side - only for it to be rightly ruled out for offside.
David De Gea made a couple of strong saves as the Spanish outfit started to threaten.
With there referee handing out yellow cards like there's no tomorrow, Sociedad came close to levelling the game as Griezman struck the bar just before half-time from a fine free-kick.
Sociedad started the second-half well and as the United defence dropped off they came close as the ball went flying around the Red Devils' penalty box.
Phil Jones was then denied by Claudio Bravo in the Sociedad goal as he flew in at the back post with a bullet header.
On the hour mark, full-back De la Bella came close for the Spanish outfit as he hit the bar from a tight angle.
The Red Devils then responded to Sociedad's pressure as they came close to doubling their advantage, but as Shinji Kagawa struggled to get the ball out of his feet, the chance passed him by in the penalty box.
With 20 minutes remaining, Rooney came close as Valenica flicked the ball on to Rooney, who smashed the ball over the bar.
As the game wore on, United were in cruise control with Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and Shinji Kagawa at the heart of everything good from the Red Devils.
As the full-time whistle sounded, United secured all three points and went top of Group A.
