Martin Jol has jokingly called for Sir Alex Ferguson to pay him back the travel expenses he incurred after travelling to England in 2004 to discuss the possibility of becoming Manchester United's assistant manager, reports the Daily Mail.

In a light-hearted interview, the Fulham boss recalled the time - when he was in charge of RKC Waalwijk - he received an invitation from the former Red Devils boss to hold talks about joining his backroom team.

The Dutchman's move was later scuppered by news that Ferguson's former Manchester United No.2 Carlos Queiroz wanted to return to Old Trafford following an ill-fated spell at Real Madrid.

Later that year, Jol turned up in the Premier League, having been appointed as Tottenham Hotspur manager, and went on to suggest that he would have struggled to go back to being second in command anyway, even at a club as big as Manchester United.

"I went over there to talk," explained Jol, who is now enjoying his stint at Craven Cottage.

"Don't forget he's Scottish so I had to pay for my own ticket - he never gave me my money back. I don't think I could be an assistant."

Jol went on to manage Spurs for three seasons, and had spells with Hamburg and Ajax before returning to the Premier League with Fulham in 2011.
