Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa was set to make his Spain debut earlier this month, but the 25-year-old is now expected to be called up by his native Brazil for next month's friendlies against Honduras and Chile.

Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari told who he thought was Atletico president Enrique Cerezo that he planned on calling up the in-form Costa, who has played twice for Brazil in friendly matches this year and has recently been linked with a move to Chelsea.

However, it soon transpired that Scolari has been tricked into revealing this information by comedians 'El Group Risa', with the conversation involving the Brazil coach broadcast live on Spanish radio show 'El Partido de las 12', according to ESPN.

"If the World Cup was today I would bring him to Brazil," Scolari inadvertently revealed. "I like Diego. The first choice is Fred, who is injured at the moment. Diego is the second, and I need to look for a third."

"I am going to call up Diego Costa for the pair of games on November 16 and 19 in Miami and Toronto.

"We have information that Spain will call him up, but he has played two games for Brazil. I think he will opt for Brazil and not Spain. It is the player's decision."

Indeed, Costa was very close to making a competitive appearance for Spain in their recent 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Finland and Georgia, which would have made him ineligible to feature for the 2014 World Cup hosts.

The current top scorer in La Liga recently stated that he was open to offers.

"Nobody has contacted me but I won't say no to whoever calls me up first. How would I say no to a national team manager?" Costa told Spanish television channel, La Sexta.

"Spain have strikers like Negredo, Soldado and Villa. They have the best ones, it's very hard to get called up."
