Sir Alex Ferguson’s book is perfectly timed for Manchester United at the moment. Even after retiring, Fergie is still playing mind games with his rivals. But the release of his memoir can go one of two ways for United.

It can have a decent affect on the team as a whole. The book has given the nation something to talk about other than United’s recent poor form and the pressure on David Moyes.

Being eight points behind leaders Arsenal has lead the press to speculate about Moyes’ ability, and whether his players are willing to perform for him as they were for Ferguson. There is no doubting Moyes had some big shoes to fill, but the start United have had is unacceptable for a squad of their ability.

The book may go further in unsettling Wayne Rooney, who is one of United’s form players at the minute. It claims Rooney was unsettled at United and how he wished for a move away from Old Trafford.

Re-raising these issues may give Rooney fresh thoughts of leaving, even though Moyes has played him in his preferred position. Rooney knows that if he wanted out, there would be a plethora of top clubs circling.

With the club as it is at this early stage, Rooney may want to leave the seemingly sinking ship in Manchester. He has, however, reinforced how much he is enjoying his football under Moyes.

It may have also riled up opponents even more to get one over Manchester United. In the book, Fergie criticises Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, two of England’s greatest midfielders, and goes as far to suggest that they are not top players.

This will not sit nicely with Gerrard or Lampard, or their clubs Liverpool and Chelsea respectively. It will give them another little drive to beat United in the league standings, something that is looking very likely at the moment.

Fergie was a controversial character, that much is for sure, and it is no surprise that his book is filled with controversial statements about some of the world’s best. We can only make links as to how it will affect United.

If extracts keep coming out and United keep getting results, it will be because of Fergie’s book. Any way you look at it, the greatest manager of all time is still doing anything he can to help his beloved United. Who knew a book could be used as a weapon to try and kick start a season?
