Although it is not clear through the recent results in the Premier League after the arrival of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid, Arsenal are still lacking that outright defensive midfielder.

The free transfer of Mathieu Flamini left everyone wondering why boss Arsene Wenger made that bold decision, but the experienced Frenchman has stunned the Premier League in protecting an in-form Arsenal back four to a level of someone worth £30million.

For years Arsenal have had a gap in that role ever since the tall powerhouse of Patrick Vieira and a return for Mathieu Flamini has pleased the Arsenal fans.

However, Flamini has experienced two knocks over the last few games and now he is out for the games against Liverpool, Chelsea, Dortmund and maybe Manchester United in three separate competitions.

These games are vital in Arsenal's campaign and they will be tested to see if this could be their season to end the infamous trophy drought. With this blow to the defensive cover, Arsenal are left with Mikel Arteta to try and see out the job. Mikel Arteta is not an outright defensive-minded player and enjoys a little run forward. This could be costly for Arsenal if they are to see out results against the big teams they face.

This is where another old face comes into play. Alex Song would have made Arsenal's squad even stronger this year if he hadn't moved away to Barcelona. The 24-year-old Cameroon international midfielder signed a five-year contract at the Nou Camp after the clubs agreed a £15million deal.

This was very costly to Arsenal as we saw last season only just scrapping the top four spot due to defensive issues. Fortunately Santi Cazorla , Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud sorted things out at the other end of the field each week.

But Alex Song may have wished he didn't leave his beloved Arsenal in making significantly fewer appearances than he did at the Emirates. Song, who had two years left on his contract, joined Arsenal as a 17-year-old from French side Bastia in 2005. He initially arrived on a one-year loan deal, with a £2.75million fee agreed to make the move permanent.

Song went on to make more than 200 appearances for Arsenal until he left to join the team in Spain.

Could the current Arsenal form and the arrival of Mesut Ozil intrigue Song back to the club and change his thought process?

If he was to move, it would be this January. This would also show if he is in the game for the football or the money. The Song and the Robin van Persie link up was extraordinary to watch and if a return was to happen, this could maybe be seen with the currently in form Olivier Giroud.

The current Arsenal midfield looks tough to compete against but Song compared to the likes of Ozil and Cazorla are different in minds. Song is heavily defensively minded and the team know what they are going to get with him; a tackle or an interception and then a ball forward to start an attack whereas Ozil and Cazorla are attacking minded and could not fill the role that Song succeeds in.
