It appears that the Buffalo Sabres have entered into rebuild mode. Most would agree that that the Sabres have been in this situation for a while. However, last night proved that they are turning that rebuild notion into reality.
The organisation made the tough decision to part ways with long time captain Thomas Vanek last night. Vanek was traded to the Islanders in exchange for forward Matt Moulson and a first and second-round draft pick.
This is clearly one of the biggest trades of the season but, in my opinion, it’s difficult to pick a clear winner in this trade.
For the Sabres, they’ll be pleased with the two high picks and will use them effectively in the team’s rebuilding process. However, it may be difficult to get consistent play out of forward Moulson.
After all, the Buffalo Sabres don’t have a John Tavares-type player, so it’ll probably take some time to find the right lines for Moulson to play on. For the Islanders, I imagine it will take a little time for Tavares to deal with the departure of his long time friend and linemate.
Likewise, it will take Vanek some time to get used to a different style of play and his new team as a whole. After all, Vanek has only played for the Sabres up to this point.
As I said, it’s difficult to pick a winner with this trade. However, I'm happy for Vanek and I don’t believe it’ll take him long to score his first goal as an Islander.
After all, this is a guy who’s scored a total of 254 goals throughout his career so far. I believe this trade could be the one that helps propel the Islanders into the playoffs this year. I can’t wait to see how many goals Vanek will score with his new team.
