UEFA President Michel Platini feels that FIFA should consider expanding the all ready over-inflated World Cup to 40 teams, because of the increase in nations under FIFA's jurisdiction.
It comes just days after Sepp Blatter said that more African teams deserve to be present at the World Cup.
The World Cup has been in its current 32-team format since France '98. Whilst what Platini is alluding to makes a slight bit of sense, and the facts do back up the amount of new nations
now under the FIFA umbrella, the decision to expand the World Cup would be a major mistake.
The World Cup in South Africa proves why it is such a bad idea. Many of the group games were largely uninteresting, and at times the quality of football was poor.
If anything the need for change in the World Cup would best be served by reducing the amount of countries that qualify back to 24 teams. By introducing an additional eight sides, it is highly possibly that we would see less competitive games thus a huge impact on genuine quality.
Alas, the likeliness of that happening is remote, if nigh on impossible as it would affect the television money that FIFA would attain.
This is not the first time Platini has looked to expand the size of international and club competitions.
He succeeded in expanding the Euros, with the 2016 edition due to be played out with 24 international sides, as opposed to 16. The Euros have always been a highly competitive tournament and many players have said it is actually harder to win than the World Cup, because at every stage you face a difficult game, it's because it is only the best of Europe that have qualified, and not a mish-mash of other countries, "just there to make up the numbers".
He has also spoke of completely dismantling the Champions League and making it a competition of 64 teams, meaning the Europa League would be scrapped. That could mean, that at any one time, seven, yes, seven teams from one country could be in the tournament.
Perhaps he would like to change the name from "Champions League", as it is by no-means just "Champions" that play in it anymore.
If Platini takes over from Blatter, as many believe he will do, what's stopping him from making the World Cup a 40-team tournament reality?
