According to the Daily Star, reports in Switzerland claim that Manchester United could make a move for Michael Goncalves as early as January.

The FC Basel starlet is currently plying his trade for the Swiss U21s as well as Basel.

United manager David Moyes has reaffirmed his policy of signing young players and developing them through the United system.

The recent promotion of Adnan Januzaj was a clear indication of Moyes's intentions for the team in the long term, and he will be looking to build his team around a set of youth players who prove their ability to come through and perform.

"Signing Adnan Januzaj on a new five-year contract at Old Trafford shows the club's willingness to go out and to try to sign the best players," Moyes wrote in his programme column for United Review.

"Young footballers get opportunities to progress here at Manchester United and I have no doubt that, in the future, Adnan will become a top player. He is 18-years-old, has good ability, plus maturity beyond his years."

"All aspects of his game will continue to improve the more he plays matches but already he has made important contributions to the team through both making and scoring goals."

Should a deal be done it would be the second Swiss U19 member to join the United ranks with Moyes already striking a deal with FC Zurich for Saidy Janko in September.

While building a strong core of youth players to gel as a team is no doubt integral to any side looking for long term sustainability in the current economic climate of football, perhaps Moyes, whose team is languishing in a far from desirable spot in the Premier League, should look to sign an actual world class defender with experience
