Manchester United face fight to sign Portugal starlet

Published Add your comment

Manchester United have been handed a sizeable blow in the pursuit of Ivan Cavaleiro, with reports suggesting that Benfica are set to offer the promising starlet a new contract.

20-year-old Cavaleiro, who arrived at the Portuguese giants from Alverca in 2007, may not be a name currently familiar to many fans but that is sure to change in the very near future with the versatile attacker having impressed massively after breaking into the first-team setup at Estadio da Luz.

His encouraging displays have seen the Portugal U21 international linked with a move away from the Primeira Liga title hopefuls, with Premier League champions United - who have endured a hugely difficult start to the new campaign under new boss David Moyes - heavily linked with his signature.

Earlier this month, it was reported that an unnamed Italian outfit were set to rival United with a bid of £2 million for Cavaleiro, but - given that he reportedly has a release clause that stands at £25.5 million - such an offer is surely unlikely to have been met with anything other than derision from Benfica.

According to talkSPORT, Cavaleiro is set to be offered a new deal by Jorge Jesus' men in order to protect one of their most prized assets from the interest of rival clubs.
