Manchester United are weighing up a move for highly-rated Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, after senior scouts watched the Portuguese youngster in Primeira Liga action at the weekend, reports Sport Witness.

The 21-year-old impressed at Estadio do Dragao on Sunday, despite the 3-1 defeat at the hands of FC Porto, and according to Portuguese publication Record, is being lined up for a move to the Premier League champions.

Red Devils boss David Moyes has received positive scouting reports from representatives at Old Trafford, which could tempt him into making a bid for Carvalho when the transfer window reopens in January.

Carvalho is under contract with Sporting Lisbon until 2018, and has a staggering €45million buyout clause written into his current deal.

It's highly unlikely that Manchester United will meet his release clause, and given Sporting Lisbon's precarious financial situation, might open negotiations with a cut-price offer at the turn of the year.

Similar in playing style to Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira, Carvalho possesses exactly the sort of tenacity that is currently lacking in Manchester United's midfield, and would be a welcome addition to Moyes's first-team squad.

The Portugal U21 international has enjoyed two loan spells away from Estádio José Alvalade, and has gone on to establish himself in Leonardo Jardim's senior side this season.
