Whereas the top four candidates for this award appear to be set in stone, deciding upon a fifth to join them in the running was an immensely difficult.

Former Tottenham star Gareth Bale - who joined Real Madrid for a world-record fee during the summer - is perhaps the most celebrated candidate.

As it is, however, we've just overlooked the Welshman in favour of Dutch maestro Van Persie.

The striker, who joined Manchester United from fierce top-flight foes Arsenal last summer, was truly pivotal for the Red Devils in attack as they strolled to their 20th title.
