Chelsea will have to fight off interest from Juventus if they want to sign Real Madrid playmaker Xabi Alonso this summer.

Jose Mourinho has reportedly told the Stamford Bridge moneymen t do what they can to secure  the services of Alonso at the end fo the season, as he is desperate for the midfielder to follow him from the Santiago Bernabeu to the Blues.

However, a report Calciomercato has claimed that Juventus have a long-standing interest in the former Liverpool star and are determined to convince him to choose the Serie A champions as his next destination.

The clamour to sign the 32-year-old has been sparked by his contract situation at Real Madrid, as his current deal expires in the summer and he would be free to agree a pre-contract agreement with the likes of Chelsea and Juventus in January.

Madrid officials are keen to tie him down to new terms, but the lure of a lucrative free transfer could see him decide to move on in what is likely to be his last major contract.

Chelsea already have a number of deeper lying playmakers in their squad, but the likes of Frank Lampard and Michael Essien have seen their effectiveness decrease in the last couple of seasons, while Alonso would bring a level of passing unmatched in Mourinho's squad currently.

This passing range is one of the main reasons this report from Italy claims is fuelling Juventus' interest, as the Bianconeri are beginning to plan for life without Andrea Pirlo and will look to move the 34-year-old on in the summer.
