Football, as we know, is a principled game. It's where the great and the good come together on a level playing field, compete evenly and then shake hands and go home for a bloody lovely cup of tea.

And it is certainly a game played only by gentlemen. So when John Terry started playing away with Wayne Bridge's (much) better half, Blatter came down on him like a ton of bricks.

"Listen, this is a special approach in the Anglo-Saxon countries. If this had happened in let's say Latin countries then I think he (Terry) would have been applauded."
