Juan Mata has refused suggestions that his wonder-goal against Arsenal in the Capital One Cup last night was a message to his manager, José Mourinho.

It was the Spanish playmaker's first goal of a season where he has been outside of Mourinho's starting XI. He has just started seven games this season and has been an unused substitute on six occasions.

But according to the express.co.uk, the Spanish international insisted he respects his manager's decisions and his goal was not a message.

Asked if he had reminded Mourinho of his ability, Mata said: "I just try to play and enjoy my football.

"The manager is the one who makes the decision. I always try my best for this club and that what I will always do."

Chelsea have won their two last games against Manchester City and Arsenal and find themselves second in the Premier League, two points behind The Gunners. Such form has given Mata cause to believe Chelsea can challenge on all fronts this season.

"I think we are ready to fight for any title," the Spaniard added.

Cesar Azpilicueta, the Chelsea right-back, was delighted with his goal that put his team in front in the 25th minute.

"I really enjoyed scoring here in a derby at Arsenal's Stadium," Azpilicueta said.

Chelsea's win means Arsene Wenger has failed to win in any of his nine meetings with Mourinho. The last time the teams met was in the 2007 League Cup final, where Chelsea won 2-1 courtesy of two Didier Drogba goals.

The draw for the quarter finals of the Capital One Cup will take place tonight.
