With the surplus of world-class midfielders at Real Madrid's disposal, it is no surprise that some have to leave in order to be able to play regular football.

And, following Mesut Ozil's departure to Arsenal, it seems likely that Xabi Alonso will be the next out of the door at the Bernabeu, with both Chelsea and Juventus favourites to sign the Spanish international.

Alonso, now 32, has found it hard to break back into the Madrid team following his return from injury. Alongside the fact that no new deal has been arranged for his contract, which expires in the summer, it seems more than likely that the Spain international will have to look elsewhere to play next season.

Both Chelsea and Juventus, who came close to signing the midfielder back in 2008, are reported to be keen on bringing Alonso into their squads.

Whilst Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, who worked with Alonso whilst manager at Real Madrid, believes a deep-lying playmaker would be the perfect addition to his squad, the Turin side see the World-Cup winner as the ideal replacement for Andrea Pirlo, whose contract also expires in the summer.

Both clubs are expected to make their intentions known this January with a cut-deal price for Alonso. Although Liverpool are said to be interested for their former player, Alonso is said to be unsure of a return to Anfield.
