Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa has explained his reasons for turning his back on his homeland and choosing to represent Spain at International level.

The Brazilian-born Spaniard has represented Brazil twice but as they were only friendlies is free to switch nationalities to Spain, as he has lived there for more than the required five years.

Costa, 25, was set to be picked by Brazil manager Luiz Felipe Scolari for their upcoming fixtures next month and is angered by Costa's decision.

"I hope people understand and respect my decision because it has been very difficult," Diego Costa told his club's official website.

"It was very difficult to choose between the country where you were born and the country that has given you everything.

"I looked at everything and saw that it was right and best to play for Spain because this is where I have done everything. All that I have in my life was given to me by this country.

"I have a special affection. Here I feel very appreciated for all that I do and I feel the love of the people.

"I hope people understand because it is not something against Brazil.

"I have family in Brazil and it is the country where I was born. I hope that God allows me to live there again in the future."

Diego Costa has been in incredible form this season with 11 La Liga goals, four more than both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Therefore it is no surprise such a big fuss was made over his choice.

Costa will now likely be selected for Spain's upcoming friendlies with Angola and South Africa in November. Then controversially for the World Cup in Brazil next year.
