Top five: Ballon d'Or dark horses (6)

Gareth Bale

Although missing out on the Champions League, Gareth Bale took them within a whisker of the coveted top four spot.

His 21 goals in the Premier League - most of them sensational strikes - helped Tottenham to a record points tally.

Without a top quality striker, Andre Villas-Boas' side would have never come close to that.

Joining Real Madrid for a world record fee, Bale turned it on on Wednesday scoring two and assisting two in a 7-3 thriller.

He's sixth favourite and at 24-years-old is a shoe in to win the award at some point in his career.
