Aldon Smith turns himself in on weapons charges

San Francisco 49ers pass rusher Aldon Smith surrendered to authorities on Tuesday night, in connection with felony weapons charges, as he continues the process of dealing with his multiple legal entanglements, reports

The 24-year-old is due to appear in court on November 12, and will return to the dock seven days later to face additional misdemeanour DUI and drug charges.

Smith's weapons charges stem from an ill-fated house party in 2012, when to people were shot and the 49ers star was stopped.

After investigators searched the home, they found three illegal assault weapons and a cache of firearms.

His self-surrender came as part of an agreement with authorities after he was initially charged with possession of illegal weapons on October 9, during which time Smith was in rehab off the back of his DUI arrest.

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said the linebacker - who has been on an indefinite absence from the NFL in 2013 - remains in positive spirits, despite the fact he hasn't got a set return date.

"The best approach is the day-to-day approach," he explained. "And just focusing on having a good day today.

"Getting the most out of today and avoid the 'if this, if that, in a week, in two weeks, in a month' timetable type of talk."
