Manchester United have been told they have no chance of signing target Leighton Baines in the January transfer window, as Everton are under no pressure to sell.

Roberto Martinez admitted David Moyes attempted to return to his former club to snap up the England left-back in the summer and reports have suggested the new Old Trafford boss might try again in January.

However, the Goodison Park boss has warned Manchester United they are wasting their time trying to land Baines, as they have already handed Everton the money that means they're under no pressure to sell.

Marouane Felliaini completed a move to Old Trafford on deadline day of the summer transfer window and the Toffees also offloaded Victor Anichebe to West Brom, filling up their coffers in the process.

"No, no, no," was Martinez's response when asked if he needs to sell stars like Baines if he wanted to recruit any more players.

"We were at that stage in the summer, but once we had that situation when Marouane and Victor Anichebe left, that gave us the opportunity to reinvest and now we are in a position where we need a bit of continuity and time to squeeze our potential as a team."

Manchester United have Patrice Evra, Alex Buttner and Fabio as their left-back options, but only the veteran Frenchman has been able to consistently perform, while Baines has been continuously progressing over the past couple of seasons.
