Stoke City earned a point over high-flying Southampton thanks to a comic goal from Asmir Begovic.

It was an unusually windy day at the Britannia Stadium and this was proven when Stoke took the lead with just 13 seconds on the clock. Goalkeeper Begovic hit a high ball down field and the wind allowed the ball through the Southampton defence and past Artur Boruc.

Rickie Lambert could have taken the Saints level when James Ward-Prowse played a teasing cross in from of goal but the England man was unable to make contact.

It took Southampton almost the whole of the first half to find an equaliser, but finally in the 42nd minute Jay Rodriguez nodded in Ward-Prowse's cross to take the game level at the interval.

Wilson Palacios came on for Glenn Whelan in the only half-time change as Mark Hughes tried to push his side to claim all three points. This looked to have worked as Jon Walters set up Marko Arnautovic but Boruc was there to deny the Austrian striker.

The Saints then realised that they could take three points from the game and pushed forward. After winning a free kick on the edge of the area, Ward-Prowse stepped up but his shot flashed over the crossbar.

The wind was still trying to help Stoke in the second half as substitute Oussama Assaidi ran into the area but his shot was well wide.

Geoff Cameron caused some trouble with his throw in when Arnautovic took a shot that was saved and then spilled by Boruc, but the resulting corner was poor from the Austrian.

Southampton managed to deal with a lot of Stoke's offence and the Potters were able to clear away many of the Saints' attempts on goal.
