Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger praised his side after they showed they can win important games following a 2-0 success over Liverpool yesterday.

The Gunners moved five points clear at the top of the Premier League following the win over Brendan Rodgers' side who had been their closest challengers going into yesterdays clash at the Emirates Stadium.

Goals from the in-form Aaron Ramsey and a first of the season for Santi Cazorla secured the three points.

We may only be ten games into the new season but the north London club's early form will be particularly encouraging for Wenger who has faced criticism in recent years for a trophy drought at the club.

The last time the 64-year-old led Arsenal to trophy success was the 2005 FA Cup but the Frenchman believes his side are now showing that they are capable of challenging for silverware.

"It was important to convince people we can win these big games," Said Wenger following the Liverpool win

"And that we did it in a convincing way is even more important. I believe nobody would dispute that we deserved to win this game.

"We live in a world where we have to be questioned and the only response we can give is on the football pitch. I am always confident but there is a long way to go. This was an important win for the team.

"We have have plenty of other big games coming up and this will help us to deal with them. It's down to consistency and we have been consistent since the first of January 2013. Ten games and 25 points is a respectable number. The players know each other better and have improved individually and collectively.

"It was very important to get off to a good start and we have a nice gap now.

"Hopefully we can maintain that over Christmas as we know our run-in form has been second to none over the last few seasons. If we get ourselves into a strong position in January we will have a very successful season.

The Gunners have a tough Champions League group and one of their three defeats this season in all competitions came at home to last year's runner's up Borussia Dortmund-whom they face a return fixture next week.

"We go to Dortmund now and we were very disappointed with how we lost to them. It was a very sloppy goal when we were in control but we got a good result in Germany last season against Bayern Munich.

"So we have been there before and are used to the atmosphere over the and hopefully we can get a good result."
