Arsenal and Newcastle set summer sights on Schmeichel

Arsenal and Newcastle United are keeping tabs on Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, as he runs down the remainder of his contract, reports the Sunday Mirror.

The 26-year-old - son of Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel - has been heavily linked with a move away from the King Power Stadium, having entered the final 12 months of his current deal.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has been credited with an interest in bringing Schmeichel junior to the Emirates Stadium, as back-up for his first-choice stopper, Wojciech Szczesny.

However, Arsenal will face serious competition from Newcastle for the Denmark international's signature, with Alan Pardew also on the lookout for cover for Tim Krul.

Schmeichel kept a clean sheet in Leicester's 3-0 win over Watford on Saturday, but will more than likely leave the club, should Nigel Pearson's side fail to win promotion to the Premier League this season.

After beginning his career at Manchester City, the Foxes star has spent the majority of his career to date in England's second tier, having lost his place at the Etihad Stadium to England number one Joe Hart.

He was linked with a move to Premier League newcomers Hull City during the summer, but Leicester rejected all three bids from the Tigers, to keep Schmeichel in the Championship for another year at least.
