Newcastle United are preparing a January move for want-away Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen, according to the Daily Star.
The Belgium international has been heavily linked with a move away from north London, after falling down the first-team pecking order at the Emirates Stadium.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger currently favours Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker as his first-choice centre-back pairing, leaving Vermaelen out in the cold.
The 27-year-old has made just one Premier League appearance for Arsenal this term, and in a World Cup year is eager to play as much first-team football as possible.
Newcastle have watched Vermaelen in action on two occasions in the past month, and Alan Pardew is keen to bring the stopper to St James' Park on loan for the remainder of the 2013/14 campaign.
Wenger will want a clause inserted that will allow Arsenal to recall the defender, but is sympathetic towards the player's current situation, and so will allow him to leave the club on a short-term deal.
