Holmes admits to 'fluke' goal

Portsmouth striker Ricky Holmes reveled in his timely opener at Fratton Park, only to later admit it being a 'fluke'.

The 30-yard screamer proved to be a pivotal moment in the match, as it set the hosts on their way to a vital 3-2 victory over Exeter City.

Holmes was appreciative for the luck, which allowed Portsmouth to take a deserved lead in at half time. However the attacker later explained he was crossing the ball for fellow forward Patrick Agyemang!

The assailant told The Portsmouth News: "No, seriously, it was a fluke. I was aiming for Pat but fortunately for us it went in.

"The keeper was coming for a cross and no one would have expected that to happen. It came at a good time for us when we were on top of the game. Thankfully, it went in."

The former Barnet man has only managed two goals this season, but still remains the clubs leading assist contributor.

A brace from the recently returned Ryan Bird was also a convenient reminder of what he can offer Guy Wittingham’s stuttering side.

Holmes later paid homage to the hard working defenders, who saw off Exeter's late onslaught to survive, and claim all three points.

Holmes added: "They got back into the game, but we managed to just about get over the line.

"They couldn’t break us down"

The result leaves Pompey 16th in League Two, whilst Exeter remain in the play-off places despite the defeat.
