Back in the summer of 2009 Hull City signed a young American wonder-kid by the name of Jozy Altidore, who joined on a season-long-loan deal from Villareal.
In what can best be summed up as a turbulent season at Hull, Altidore left with one league goal in 28 appearances. In that ONE season, Altidore went through two chairman's, one manager, one 'Temporary Football Management Consultant' (still ludicrous), one earthquake that rocked his home nation, one temporary ban from the first team for tweeting that he had been dropped before Brown had released the team, and one headbutt on Alan Hutton, which was his last (and some would cruelly say, only) contribution in a Hull City shirt.
The stats for Altidore's spell at Hull however, do not do him justice. He was strong, the only player that had the skill and balls to run at the opposition defence, and the only player who you felt had the potential to go on to greater things.
Many forget, he was still a teenager when he joined Hull. He was bound to be irrational, a tad inconsistent, and a teeny bit prone to the odd flare of rage, but there was a reason Villarreal had spent $10million on the 19-year-old.
Altidore then went out to Holland to fulfill his potential. A two year spell with AZ Alkmaar saw a vastly superior goal return to what he produced at Hull, and in 67 appearances he managed to 39 goals, better than a goal every two games.
The elusive phrase 'better than a goal every two games' usually encapsulates the attention of scouts and fans alike, and Altidore made the move to Wearside in the summer for an undisclosed fee.
Altidore though could have made the return to East Yorkshire, with Assem Allam stating that after the Charlie Austin move fell through, they tried to hijack the American's move to Sunderland, but it was too late in the day.
Altidore's Sunderland career has started just how his Hull career began; a goal in the league cup, but no return yet in the league.
It's a sure fire bet that he'll find the net eventually, but how long will it take? Is this going to be another classic example of a foreign player who simply can't cut it in England?
