Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are set to battle for the signature of Barcelona starlet Sergi Roberto, according to reports.
El Mundo Deportivo claims that both the Reds and Spurs have already made contact with the midfielder’s agent, and are ‘probing’ potential transfer options.
The Spain youth international won’t come cheap however, with a €20million release clause in his contract at the Nou Camp.
Roberto joined the Barca academy back in 2006, and made his first team debut four years later. However, he’s only made six appearances for the Catalan giants in La Liga ever since.
It’s unsurprisingly led to speculation over a move away, with the Premier League duo now in the mix for the 21-year-old’s signature.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has overseen a change in fortunes since taking the reigns at Anfield, and has also given youth a chance in Merseyside.
Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson are just two players to thrive in recent times since joining the Reds, who appear set to challenge for the Premier League title this season.
And, Roberto could be the next youngster on the road to success if he opted for Liverpool at the next available opportunity.
Spurs might have something to say about it however, as Andre Villas-Boas looks to build a team for the future at White Hart Lane.
Despite the arrival of Christian Eriksen and Roberto Soldado this summer, Tottenham Hotspur have struggled to create chances from open play in north London.
The arrival of Spanish starlet Roberto could change all that however, and also help make the club a top four challenger on a regular basis.
It remains to be seen whether Barcelona are interested in selling one of their stars of the future though, and it would be understandable if Gerardo Martino opted against selling the youngster.
