Manchester United star Wayne Rooney believes his side have a great chance of beating Premier League leaders Arsenal on Sunday.

Arsenal go into the game at Old Trafford eight points behind Manchester United, however Rooney is confident the gap will be just five by Sunday evening.

Manchester United had a poor start to the season but they have since gone on an eight-match unbeaten run.

Rooney, speaking after Manchester United's goalless draw against Real Sociedad in the Champions League, said on Sunday's encounter:

“We're obviously capable of beating Arsenal, we've done it many times in the past,” Rooney told ManUtd.com.

“They're on a good run of form at the moment and are top of the league, so we know it's going to be a difficult game.

"But we have to go into that game confident, believing we can edge closer to them and bring us back into the mix of being at the top of the league."

Rooney believes United's slow start to the season is down to the club having to adapt to a new manager after Sir Alex Ferguson's departure.

However the England international believes United are now in a 'great position' to close the gap on Arsene Wenger's Arsenal side.

“We had a whole new set-up and different ideas from the manager," added Rooney.

"It's up to us to try and implement those ideas as best we can. It was a bit of a change but we're starting to show the things that the manager wants.

“Eight matches unbeaten is a good run. We're confident at the minute, we're getting more clean sheets and we're playing with a freedom, if you like. We're just looking forward to every game now.”

The 28-year-old believes it is too early to say if Arsenal will be competing for the Premier League title but has been impressed with their 'brilliant' start to the season.
