Who is the most valuable player in world football? Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Robin Van Persie, Leo Messi?

It's probably a straight toss-up between Messi and Ronaldo, despite Gareth Bale's world record-breaking summer switch to Real Madrid.

If either of the El Clasico goal machines were to move right now, they'd almost certainly break that newly established mark.

But what about if we include the best players of the last 10 years - would a vintage era Ronaldinho be worth more or less than current Leo Messi?

Would a Shevchenko in his pomp command a greater transfer fee than the 2010 World Cup winning Andres Iniesta vintage?

Well, transfermrkt.co.uk has collected the data and compiled a table of historic market values. Based on transfers past and present, it calculates an estimate market value for the world's best players.

It fails to take into account inflation and only includes players from the last 10 years - so unfortunately we can't compare the relative valuations of Messi and Maradona, the Brazilian Ronaldo and Pele.

But it does determine how much Kaka was worth in 2007, and how that compares to Gareth Bale today.
