Barcelona suffer blow in new 'keeper pursuit

Published Add your comment

Barcelona may well miss out on Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to Borussia Dortmund, according to Punto Pelota.

The Catalan club are in the market for a new goalkeeper with regular number one Victor Valdes indicating his desire to quit the Nou Camp in the summer.

Both Pepe Reina and Thibault Courtois have been linked with a move to Barcelona in recent months, but reports have suggested they are close to sealing a deal for Ter-Stegen - although the player's camp has denied that and said he could pen a new deal with Monchengladbach.

According to Punto Pelota that's exactly what he plans to do - but with the intention of signing for Borussia Dortmund in 2015.

Barcelona chief Andoni Zubizarreta, a former goalkeeper himself, was recently spotted in Germany amid rumours he was closing a deal for the 21-year-old.

However he denied the club had finalised any deal for a replacement for Valdes, and said the search for a new number one was ongoing.

"It is true that I was in Germany, because we are working on some subjects, but this operation is not closed," Zubizarreta, capped 126 times by Spain, told Canal Plus TV Spain.

"I recognise that many keepers are of interest, but it is not easy to find a man with the right characteristics to replace Victor Valdes.

"Barcelona never speak about chances for the squad, but we still have enough time until July 2014."
