GMS academy member Will Rooney names his top ten MMA welterweights...

1. Georges St Pierre

Long time UFC Welterweight champion Georges St Pierre has defended his title an astonishing nine times.

After a long lay off, he came back to beat former training partner Carlos Condit then dominated Nick Diaz to a decision win.

He may be one of the most well rounded fighters in the sport and definitely the best MMA wrestler. He meets a tough challenge next in Johnny Hendricks at UFC 167.

2. Johny Hendricks

Could Hendricks be the one to dethrone GSP?

He certainly possesses the power, as displayed against John Fitch and Martin Kampmann. His NCAA Div 1 wrestling background could be enough to stop the takedown and he only needs to land one punch to end the fight.

3. Carlos Condit

Condit got back to winning ways after back-to-back losses to the two men above. He avenged a loss by KOing Martin Kampmann in on the of the fights of the year.

He then rocked GSP in their title fight and believes if they meet again he can finish the fight. He'll meet Matt Brown in December.

4. Rory McDonald

A poor but smart performance against Jake Ellenberger in his last fight as he jabbed his way to victory. McDonald is probably the biggest and best prospect in the UFC, having only lost once to Carlos Condit in a fight he was winning before he got caught.

A rematch would have made a lot more sense, however the Canadian will face Robbie Lawler at UFC 167.

5. Jake Shields

Shields doesn't have the greatest style in the world but he gets the job done.

He upset the Brazilian crowd when he beat crowd favourite Damian Maia at UFC Fight Night 29 and had previously done the same grinding a decision over Tyrone Woodley.

6. Damian Maia

The Brazilian looked superb before his loss to Shields. He cruised past Dong Hyum Kim, Rick Story and then sent John Fitch out of the UFC.

He lost a razor thin decision to Shields in October and will be looking to get back on a winning streak.

7. Martin Kampmann

Kampmann has taken somewhat of the 'gatekeeper' role in the 170lbs division. However, he certainly has taken to the role and really pushes fighters to their limits.

He shocked Jake Ellenberger with a TKO. He's had back-to-back losses to the guys ranked two and three and will be looking to bounce right back.

8. Ben Askren

The Bellator MMA champion would argue he should be at number one in this list.

He's a perfect 13-0 however he hasn't really fought anyone of note.

Askren was asking for a fight with GSP however he needs to sign a UFC contract and beat someone above him on this list before getting a title shot.

9. Jake Ellenberger

It was a very poor performance last time out against Rory McDonald. However Ellenberger is still a top fighter holding wins over Nate Marquart and Jake Shields most notably.

He'll face off against former Strikeforce WW champion Tarec Saffreidine at UFC Fight night 34, which will be the main event.

10. Hector Lombard

It may be a little premature but Lombards performance in his Welterweight debut was astonishing.

He finished former Strikeforce WW champion Nate Marquart in devastating fashion at UFC 166. He lost a couple of thin decisions at MW and it looks like 170lbs is his new home.
