After an impressive start to the recent 2013-14 NBA season, questions have been raised as to who Michael Carter-Williams is and where did this future all-star potential come from?
Averaging 12.1 points, 7.4 assists and 2.8 steals per game for Syracuse Orange, Carter-Williams was not deemed as a future star when entering the recent draft. The Philadelphia 76ers took him with the eleventh pick but, after trading away their all-star point guard Jrue Holiday to acquire Nerlens Noel, Carter-Williams suddenly had a starting position at point guard and big shoes to fill.
He made an impressive start to his NBA career putting up 22 points, 12 assists, 9 steals and 7 rebounds in his first game. He tied a franchise record with his nine steals and also broke the NBA record for the most steals in a debut game. To the shock of NBA fans worldwide, he continued to impress, continuing to put up big numbers and leading the 76ers to a 3-0 start to the season, beating the Heat along the way.
Although this run was ended by a 110-90 loss to Golden State, Carter-Williams is still seen as one of the top contenders in the running for this year’s rookie of the year award, to the shock of many fans heading into the season.
The 76ers have recently been linked with attempting the pick up Andrew Wiggins in the next draft, even possibly having to trade away some of their key players to do so, so we can expect the franchise to be centred around Carter-Williams. He is a bright prospect in the league and, with the possible addition of Andrew Wiggins in the future, could lead the 76ers to success.
Michael Carter-Williams is the player to look out for this season. He may not currently be All-Star potential, but he is showing promising potential for the future. I believe that if Carter-Williams can continue to improve his game, he will without a doubt be a future All-Star.
