Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho praised Samuel Eto'o after his two goals against Schalke at Stamford Bridge and suggested the striker is one of his favourite players.

Eto'o replaced the injured Fernando Torres in the Chelsea attack and his brace and a late Demba Ba goal helped the west London club comfortably beat the Germans.

The win sees Chelsea stay top of group E, three points ahead of last night's opponent and Mourinho did not hold back in his praise of Eto'o.

"My favourite players are the players that win matches for me, not the ones that lose matches for me," Mourinho said.

"Samuel worked with me in the best season of my career (at Inter). We won everything. So he's in a good position."

The former Barcelona striker arrived at Chelsea from Anzhi Makhachkala in the summer and Mourinho is pleased the Cameroonian striker looks to be returning to his best.

"He was for two years playing without big motivations and when you play without big motivations, you train without big motivations and you lose condition, and you lose sharpness, and you lose even appetite," Mourinho added.

"It was not a surprise for me that he arrived here not in the best conditions after two years in Anzhi.

"Now step by step he is going. He is 32 but he's a fit, slim guy.

"He's not a heavy body. He's intelligent, of course, and I think goals give confidence."

Next up for Chelsea in the Champions League are a trip to Basle and the home match against Steaua Bucharest and Mourinho is hopeful they can qualify for the knockout stages.

"We won in quite a comfortable way and it's good for us," Mourinho added.

"After the Basle defeat we put ourselves in a difficult situation and it's fantastic that after the fourth fixture we have qualified, almost. Not yet."

Chelsea host West Brom this weekend and will be looking to get their season back on track after their disappointing defeat at the hands of Newcastle last week.
