4. Ryan Giggs

It is hard to avoid the Welsh wizard when considering legendary footballers. The Manchester United winger's extraordinary career span means he tops most appearances lists and that is also the case in the Champions League.

When Ryan Giggs came on for Marouane Fellaini against Shakhtar Donetsk early in October he went one ahead of Raul, with whom he shared top-spot, to sit alone with 145 outings in the tournament. He has since played in both matches against Real Sociedad which takes him to 147.

The Welshman has also had considerable success in the tournament, having won it twice, in 1999 against Bayern Munich and in 2008 against Chelsea. He has also been on the losing side twice against Barcelona in 2009 and 2011.
