Wayne Rooney's recent excellent form for Manchester United has prompted a rapid rise in his number of fans on Facebook, with October seeing the page of the England international grow more quickly than that of any other sports star.

After a period of uncertainty during the summer transfer window following a change in management at Old Trafford, Rooney has been in flying form, scoring nine goals in his last 14 appearances for club and country.

The popularity of his decision to stay with Manchester United has now been reflected on Facebook, with almost 1 million new users becoming a fan of Rooney's official page in the past month alone.

Rooney's total fan number now stands at over 15 million, making him the most popular Premier League player on the social network, while his percentage growth last month was superior to any other Facebook athlete.

The Manchester United forward saw his page grow by 5.58 percent in October, with WWE superstar John Cena the nearest competitor to Rooney, and Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta in third position.

Rooney's growth was far superior to other prominent names in football, including former Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi of Barcelona and sporting icon David Beckham.
