Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is set to begin a busy January transfer window with an attempt at signing Marseille defender Nicolas N'Koulou, reports the Metro.
The Frenchman has reportedly been tracking the defender for a number of seasons, since coming through the youth set-up at big-spending Monaco.
According to the Metro, Wenger sent scouts to watch the defender against Napoli in last night's Champions League clash, in which Marseille were defeated 3-2.
Wenger is reportedly impressed with the potential that the Cameroon international is displaying, and is looking to sign the player to bolster his defensive options.
With question marks currently hanging over former captain Thomas Vermaelen, N'Koulou is being seen as the prime man to replace the Belgian.
The versatile defender has spent the past three seasons in Marseille, becoming an integral figure at the Stade Velodrome in the process.
The 6ft defender is capable of playing in numerous positions, including right back and defensive midfield, which could prove vital in Arsenal's search for silverware this season.
