Stories of Manchester United's interest in Aaron Ramsey while he was still at Cardiff City have been known for some time - but what few remember is that they actually announced that they were close to signing the Welsh wizard on their official website.

Ramsey is currently in the form of his life for Arsenal, having joined the north London side back in 2008 for £5 million.

Before he joined Arsenal he was a target for Manchester United, with the Daily Mail reporting in May 2008 that Sir Alex Ferguson viewed him as a 'long-term replacement for Paul Scholes'.

That wasn't enough to persuade him to choose Old Trafford, something which is said to have infuriated Fergie.

"It is an honour to be wanted by massive clubs like Arsenal, Manchester United and Everton," Ramsey said after signing for the Gunners in June 2008.

"But in the end I had to make the decision I felt was right for my future.

"Cardiff City gave me my start in professional football and I won't forget that. It doesn’t seem that long ago when I first joined as a schoolboy. I have come a fair way since then, but there is still a lot of hard work ahead."

Unfortunately for the Red Devils, two months earlier they had announced they had agreed a fee with Cardiff for Ramsey's signature - a step usually reserved for when a transfer is essentially completed.

The story read: "Manchester United is delighted to announce it has agreed terms with Cardiff City for the transfer of Aaron Ramsey subject to contract terms being agreed and the player passing a medical."

In their announcement there is a hint of foreboding - they admit that he had been allowed to talk to other Premier League teams. Who could that have been?

Ramsey has been a revelation this season and has already scored 11 goals - the same amount he achieved in his previous five years at Arsenal.

Arsenal fans will no doubt be delighted that they got one over on Manchester United all those years ago - can they do it again when the two teams go head to head this weekend?
