In the final meeting of the 2013 flat season, Richard Hughes was declared champion.
Hughes has had another inspirational season riding for Richard Hannon and won his second title in the row. 'Hughsie' rode a phenomenal 203 winners this season, which was 17 better than Ryan Moore.
The jockey had an absolutely outstanding season, riding some absolute blinders.
He finally rode a classics winner - Sky Lantern - to snatch the 1000 Guineas from the Charlie Hills trained Just the Judge and won aboard the filly again in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot by four lengths and then the Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes.
As the famous saying goes, 'with one becomes two' and Hughes had his second classics win in the Epsom Oaks. With Hannon not having any runners, he opted to ride Ralph Beckett's second-string horse Talent. The filly flew home, beating Beckett's other horse, 3/1 favourite Secret Gesture.
Hughes' favourite horse, however, through the season was Toronado, and he will also remember the epic battles he had with Dawn Approach.
A poor display against Dawn Approach in the 2000 Guineas was almost reversed at Royal Ascot in the St. James' Palace Stakes, where Hughes got the colt to within a head of Dawn Approach.
It was finally third time lucky at Glorious Goodwood in the Sussex Stakes. On the difficult narrow track, Hughes timed his ride to perfection and cruised to a four-and-a-half length victory.
The champion jockey also captured the Queen Elizabeth II on board Olympic Glory.
His season closed superbly as he flew to America to ride in the Breeders' Cup. 'Hughsie' bagged himself a winner on the Charlie Hills trained Chriselliam in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Group 1 Turf race, before riding Simenon to fourth place in the Melbourne Cup for Willy Mullins.
Hughes will without a doubt look to defend his crown in 2014 and has plenty of exciting rides including Sky Lantern and Tornonado. He also will ride 2000 Guineas fancy Toormore for Hannon if all goes to plan.
