Lionel Messi has been revealed as the first selection for Franz Beckenbauer's much publicised 'Galaxy XI', according to Goal.

And the Germany legend has remained true to his word, stating that his admiration for Messi, who will captain the side.

Beckenbauer claimed last week that he was thinking long and hard about who to include in his side, which he described need to comprise of the best footballers in the world.

However he was unreserved in his praise for Barcelona's star-man, and lauded the superstar as the world's greatest player.

"In my opinion, Messi is the best player in the world. His talents, his movement and his skills are extraordinary and then he is able to score goals," the World Cup winner said.

"He's a real leader and also, outside of the field, he's a gentleman and his character is perfect."

Speculation around social media has been rampant concerning who will make up the 'Galaxy XI', whose creation comes after numerous sightings of strange markings on some of the world's most famous landmarks accompanying the words #WINNERTAKESEARTH.

It remains to be seen who will join Messi in the best team ever formed, and in fact who they will play, but it shouldn't be too long before another player is identified.
