With Monday's eagerly-anticipated release of the 2013 FIFA Puskas award shortlist, it's that wonderful time of year once again when football lovers across the globe come together to celebrate the very best goals scored during the calendar year.

The award - named after former Real Madrid and Hungary icon Ferenc Puskas - was first established in 2009 and has been won by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar over recent seasons.

As ever with confined lists of this nature, there is always scope for huge controversy as some great goals inevitably miss out on the whole process.

Here, GMS picks five truly spectacular goals from the calendar year that did not make the shortlist for this year's prize.

Please feel free to comment on our suggestions. Do you feel any of the goals here should have been included on the shortlist?

Which other goals could have merited inclusion? What is your favourite strike scored since last November?

View the actual shortlist here and then click on to see our choices...
