Manchester United superstar midfield target Andres Iniesta is yet to agree a new deal at Barcelona.
The Spanish international turned down an initial contract offer in September, according to The Daily Star, alerting a host of clubs to his potential availability.
David Moyes was said to be one of the managers taking an interest in the situation, after failing to add an attacking midfielder to his Red Devils squad in the summer transfer window.
The arrival of 29-year-old Iniesta would be a major transfer coup if the Premier League champions could pull it off, but Barcelona won’t want to let the player leave without a fight, and have revealed that there is no deadline over agreeing a new contract.
“The negotiations for the extension Iniesta are on-going. When we have something definitive, we communicate but things need time. There is no deadline to complete extensions,” said Barca spokesperson Toni Freixa at a press conference earlier today.
Iniesta has made a solid start to the season at the Nou Camp, helping Barcelona to top spot in La Liga as Gerardo Martino’s side look to retain their La Liga crown.
But, if new terms can't be agreed, this could be the three-time Champions League winners last season in Catalonia. And, if that is the case, then Manchester United will hope that he chooses Old Trafford as his new home.
The Red Devils missed out on Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas last summer, during a frustrating period for the new manager after he replaced Sir Alex Ferguson.
Signing Iniesta would change all that however, and put Manchester United back on top as the premier force in the transfer market in England.
