Arsenal's record signing Mesut Özil endured arguably his most difficult afternoon on Sunday since his high-profile summer move, as the Premier League leaders succumbed to defeat at the hands of Manchester United.

Özil was a £42.5 million acquisition from Real Madrid on deadline day and has played a prominent role in propelling the Gunners to the top of the Premier League and to the brink of the Champions League knockout phase.

The Germany international, however, was shackled for much of the encounter at Old Trafford by Manchester United midfielder Phil Jones, and unable to prevent Arsenal from falling to a narrow defeat.

Özil was one of those supposed to have been slightly feeling the effects of a flu-type bug, which resulted in Per Mertesacker and Tomas Rosicky being ruled out, but the 25-year-old displayed no signs of illness after the defeat.

The former Real Madrid attacker, as reported by the Daily Express, was pictured leaving a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning after Arsenal had arrived back in London, playing up to the reputation he gained in Spain as something of a playboy.

Özil has been named in the Germany squad for their friendlies with Italy and England in the next few days, but was given extra time by manager Joachin Löw to recover from illness.
