The Premier League is he holy land for many a foreign footballer and the dream of every little boy far and wide. Everybody wants a piece of the biggest, most entertaining football league in the world. The Premier League has now played host to a remarkable 100 different nationalities from across the world.

Sides spent whopping sums of money in a record-breaking window this summer, a 29% increase on the previous year - a worrying amount of money. But it does have the advantage of bringing in some of the most exciting players to the world's most exciting league.

Which summer signing is setting this year's competition alight? Here's my top five...

5. Gary Medel

Medel has been a rock for Cardiff City so far this term. Signed from Sevilla in the summer, Medel smashed Cardiff's previous transfer record. The Chilean is recognised for his tenacious style of play and was subsequently nicknamed 'Pitbull'.

His stats are remarkable for a player in a team like Cardiff. The defensive midfielder was pictured with Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal in a photo dubbed 'the three best players' in the Chile national team after their World Cup qualifying game against Ecuador, a game in which Medel scored the winner.

4. Dejan Lovren

Southampton defensive colleague Jose Fonte believes Lovren is a 'great player,' and I agree with him. In fact, they are both quality centre-backs and once again Southampton have nicked another gem from underneath the bigger teams' noses.

Fonte has been a big help in getting Lovren on this list and superb displays at the back have seen the Saints boast the best defence in the league so far. The Croat has been key to their success, being solid at the back and even netting the winner in a shock victory over Liverpool.

3. Loic Remy

I fully believe that if Newcastle had not got this talented Frenchman on loan from QPR, that they would be loitering near the foot of the table at this point. The striker has bagged eight goals already this season and his eye for goal is unquestionable.

He is a natural-born finisher and one that will get Newcastle 20 important goals this season. He is the one bit of quality in a Newcastle side that can sometimes give poor displays. That being said, though, they got a point against Liverpool and shocked moneybags Chelseaand Tottenham.

Maybe I'm misjudging them. Nevertheless, Remy is quality.

2. Alvaro Negredo

When Negredo signed for Manchester City, I questioned if he could fit in. How wrong was I? The Spaniard has already netted nine goals in all competitions.

He displays a dominant aerial presence accompanied by a sure left foot, an apparent telepathic connection with Jesus Navas and he has quickly created a skilled striking partnership with Sergio Aguero.

He shows desirable promise and will play a part in City's title challenge this season.

1. Mesut Ozil

Could it be anyone else? Ozil has been world class since his move from Spanish outfit Real Madrid - actually, he was world class there too.

He oozes class and is a delight to watch. His masterful touch and ball control entertain even neutral supporters. It's difficult to dislike this man when watching him play.

Ozil has played a huge part in Arsenal's early season form. A signing like him is a statement of intent and he has lived up to his price tag already. What a man. What a player. What a signing.
